The Diaries: 1876

The diary entries of 1876 span the entire year. Schweigert writes about visiting his in-laws, the Millers, with his wife Emma and their young son, Charles. He also writes of teaching school at School No. 4 in Wayne District. He attended events, such as a debate at the Friedensburg School on Jan. 5, on who deserves more honor: Columbus for discovering America, or Washington for defending it. He doesn't indicate which argument, if any, swayed his opinon, but the entry is interesting nonetheless, as a cultural artifact from the time period. On Feb. 15, Schweigert wins a local election in Friedensburg, writing: “I was a candidate for register and received 149 votes of the 150 votes polled.”
