The 1880 diary entries begin in March, just as Schweigert was closing the schoolhouse until the fall. Upon closing the school, he notes that he washed it as well. Schweigert also writes about tending his garden, making a wagon for his children and working odd jobs while not teaching school. He also uses his diary to keep track of the hours and days he was worked and for whom.
